Biography
Born in Turin, Scala started his career in comics in 1950 under the guidance of Luciano Bottaro. He assisted Bottaro on his comics for the publishers Alpe and Bianconi, and continued the series 'Pik e Pok' when Bottaro went into civil service.
In the mid-fifties, possibly in 1954, Scala moved to Australia and signed a four-year contract with the Cleveland Publishing Company. At Bottaro's suggestion, he created Sergeant Bottleneck (Cleveland, ~1955-1958). He possibly also created Diet Slurp & Hiccup Private Investigators (Horwitz, ~1958-1959).
In 1959 he returned to Italy and worked for a range of Italian and international publishers before starting to draw Disney characters.
His first Disney work was in collaboration with Bottaro in 1962, initially Mickey Mouse. From 1971, he also drew Duck stories. He is most known for his parodies on world literature, proverbs, TV advertisements and sports for Topolino from 1987 to 1990. Scala was one of the most famous and successful Italian Disney artists. In his 35-year run on Disney comics, he drew about 465 stories.
